“How Can I Help”?
Through my involvement with TPOMBA and as a teacher in the public education system, I come into contact with many families in need. Whether it is a single mom expecting triplets, new immigrants trying to acclimatize to Canada while launching into parenthood, or just your average family with more babies than they planned for or have the support to look after, multiple-birth families face challenges that most people with singletons can barely imagine.
Diapers are a constant need for parents of multiples. Newborn triplets go through approximately 220 diapers a week. At about 50 cents a diaper, you can imagine the impact for a family on a fixed income. Donate a box, and I will ensure they find a bum to keep dry!
A good book shared with a child who is ready to devour it is a great way to foster a love of reading. Families with several babies/toddlers often don't have time to read with their children, or the funds to purchase developmentally appropriate reading material as their little ones grow. Visit http://astore.amazon.ca/simonalex-20 and select your favourites from my family's list of recommendations. Have your order delivered to my home, and I will see it finds a greedy mind (or three!)
Multiple Birth children are often language delayed, and older babies and toddlers can really benefit from a high-quality language development DVD aimed at their particular age group (also provides care-givers a 20-minute break while the show is running!) Choose your favourite from our selected list at http://astore.amazon.ca/prenatal-20 and have it sent to me—I will ensure it finds a happy home with 4 or more eyes ready to watch and learn!
Nutrition can be a real challenge for parents of multiples, especially in the early weeks/months of parenthood. Between diaper changes, feeding and soothing two or more babies, time to prepare and eat a healthy meal is almost non-existent. Why not cook a casserole or muffins, package your meal in a container you don't need returned, and leave it on my front porch with a label listing ingredients and reheating/serving instructions? I will deliver it on your behalf to a hungry family in need!
Time is a precious commodity for all of us, especially those with several babies or toddlers to run after. If you feel able and willing to spare 2 hours a week for a minimum of two months, why not consider signing up a volunteer for Toronto Parents of Multiple Births (TPOMBA)? More information on the Baby Brigade can be found online at http://www.tpomba.org/volunteers.htm
Prayer is a much-needed ingredient for families in challenging times. Marital strain, financial burden and physical or emotional burn-out are all factors exacerbated by a multiple birth situation. Please pray for specific needs and families as you feel led by your personal faith. Your focussed energy in this area does make a difference!
